Until now. Well, at least virtually.
I continued my walk to “I don’t really know where” in March. As a reminder, I started to track my daily walking in January. Part of the reason was to provide an incentive to keep it up. While I certainly enjoy my daily walks, creating the virtual walk added a new dynamic. Posting my virtual travels across the states has become a way of holding myself accountable. I’ve had several readers ask where my update for March is…, and a big thank you for those queries!
Slow start in March
I got off to a slow start in March. The first week, I was averaging about 4.75 miles per day. That’s down from my February average of over 5 miles a day. As the month progressed, I got my groove on and was able to end up with an average of 5.06. Some days I wasn’t able to get out as long as I wanted but for the month, I walked 157 miles even. Not bad and a little better than February’s 146.65.
Recall that I started March in Playland Park just outside Rye New York. So, where did I end up after walking 157 miles by the end of March? Newark Delaware! Displaying my ignorance, I didn’t even know there was a Newark in Delaware. But now I know there is. It’s a small city with a population of around 33,000. It’s also the home of the University of Delaware. In addition to the university, Newark is known as a sports hub for figure skating. Over the years, Newark has been the training ground for numerous champions in US, International and Olympic skating. You can read up on Newark here.
446 miles so far in 2020
Three months into the year I’ve walked over 446 miles. Not bad. March’s daily average is just about 10% higher than January’s average so I’m pleased that I’m increasing my average daily steps. I hope to be able to continue that trend into the second quarter of the year.
The number of states continues to increase each month. I started in Massachusetts and roamed through Rhode Island. Moved across Connecticut and then into New York. In March I marched into New Jersey, slipped along Pennsylvania and finished in Delaware. Seven states! Wonder where I’ll end up at the end of April?
In addition to keeping up with my daily walks, I continue to not purchase ice cream! For the back story on why I’m not purchasing my favorite dessert check out this post from earlier this year. Through March, Mrs. P2F and I now have $150 in additional funds to donate to a worthy charity this year. We haven’t settled on which charity just yet but we have thrown some ideas around to consider. I’ll be certain to let you know when we make the decision.
Short and Late
That’s it for this month’s walking update. A bit short and a bit late in the month, as we have been focused on some other priorities in April. But now it’s complete!
Let us know if you’ve been walking, running, biking or anything else. It’s been a crazy time and would be interesting to hear how others are coping and getting outdoors regularly.
Stay safe…stay distant.
